Overview

A 75,000 m² secondary school campus in Fushun. The site borders a riverside park plaza to the south; the main entrance is placed on the west so that it lines up with the plaza, which can then serve as an extension of the school's outdoor activity space.

The education authority asked for a red-brick character. Teaching blocks face south for daylight and run parallel to the neighbouring housing, so the campus sits calmly within its surroundings.

Planning

The sports ground is placed on the east side, running north–south, with ball courts in the north-east corner.

Quiet and active zones are clearly separated, keeping sports-ground noise away from the classrooms and making the school easier to manage.
The main entrance on the west lines up with the riverside park plaza, which can serve as extra outdoor space for the school.
Teaching blocks face north–south for daylight and run parallel to the neighbouring housing, so the campus sits calmly in the city.

Massing

The north of the site is reserved for future development; the south faces the riverside plaza. Three zones — middle school, kindergarten and swimming hall — with the active zone to the east and the quiet zone to the west.
The main entrance on the west lines up with the riverside plaza.
The lecture hall sits in the south-east corner, strengthening the entrance and screening an existing substation.
Courtyards are spread between the teaching groups to ease crowding between classes and give each year group its own area.
Standard classroom units are turned to face north–south, parallel to the neighbouring housing.
Rooms in each group are refined by function, giving the campus a clear, stepped massing.
